Top Bollywood flicks with gory flavor

A number of films released in recent years have created quite a stir in the media due to its violent visual content. This is a new trend in Bollywood which shows no signs of slowing down. But this is not the first tryst with violence/gore for Bollywood. There were many movies before and after this film which followed the bloodied path. We take a look at the top 5 films in this category.

Matrubhoomi (2003)

Cast: Tulip Joshi, Sudhir Pandey and Sushant Singh

This is one of those rare Indian movies which won a lot of accolades overseas. The film is definitely not suitable for all ages. There are many scenes which show sexual violence and this may upset many sections of the audience.

The film starts off showing a woman going through labor pains. Helped by the midwives, she gives birth while her husband and a male relative is waiting outside. The baby is a girl which is a bad news in that village. In the next scene, the father drowns the crying baby in a pot of milk. This is probably the most shocking scene ever in a Bollywood movie involving a baby. The film depicts the sad story of female infanticide which is so common in many parts of India. It shows what would happen if women disappears from India completely.

Bandit Queen (1994)

Cast: Seema Biswas, Nirmal Pandey and Aditya Srivastava

Description

The movie revolves around the bandit queen Phoolan Devi. She was captured and prosecuted by the police but was made a Robin Hood like figure by the Indian press. The media created an aura around her which made the task of the director very difficult to tell the truth and hold the interest of the audience at the same time. The film depicted a certain degree of nudity which only helped to fuel the controversy already surrounding the film.

Rakta Charitra (2010)

Cast: Vivek Oberoi, Shatrughan Sinha and Sudeep

The film is based on the life of Paritala Ravi who was an accused in a number of murder cases. The story highlights an intense political feud between two individuals which resulted in extreme bloodbath. The action scenes were too gory and difficult to digest for the average audience. However, the film received good reviews from the critics.

Ghost (2012)

Cast: Shiney Ahuja, Sayali Bhagat and Julia Bliss

The film shares its name with the famous Hollywood movie but the comparison ends there. This is a very poorly made film which relied too much on on-screen violence to survive in the box office. The story follows a doctor and a detective who are investigating strange happenings in a hospital. The film has several references to The Bible and Fires of Hell which is a first for Indian Cinema. The film was subjected to a great deal of criticism and controversies and some scenes were even chopped off by the censor board.

Not a Love Story (2011)

Cast: Roht G. Banawlikar, Deepak Dobriyal and Mahie Gill

It is a crime-thriller film that is inspired by the real-life murder of Neeraj Grover in 2008. The highlight of the film is that the shooting was completed in a record time of 20 days. Though the film received good reviews, many agreed that it should be watched by only those who can digest blood, gore, violent sex and constant camera movement. The graphic detailing resulted in too much blood and sexual connotations which might not suit all. However, since the film is based on true events the gut-wrenching scenes were probably necessary.
