The Central government has banned the AXN channel in India with effect from Wednesday. The centre has decided to put the ban on the channel for running a show ‘World’s Sexiest Advertisements’.

The Sony Entertainment, the distributor of AXN in India, has been sent the note about the government’s decision.

The Information and Broadcasting Minister Priyaranjan Dasmunsi said that in India, people will not be able to see the channel until March 15 this year.

The central government has taken the decision using the Cable Television Networks (Regulation) Act, 1995.

Under this act, the Information and Broadcasting Ministry has barred the AXN channel’s transmission and retransmission for telecasting the program. According to the ministry, the program, ‘World’s Sexiest Advertisements’ was against decency and outraged public morality.

The Information and Broadcasting Ministry has often given time-to-time warnings to different channels for showing obscene programs and shows.

The government had first planned action against the Channels to restrict them to show obscene shows in 2005. Then, the government had framed some downlinking guidelines in 2005 that were made mandatory for the TV Channels.
