Youth population and unemployment: Both heading in same direction

Unemployment is one of the serious problems of India and it is becoming even more serious day by day. India is the second largest populated country in the world. Earlier, when the population of the country was smaller, there were hardly a person without a job or unable to earn a living. During those days, most of the people used to live in rural areas and depended entirely on agriculture and household businesses. Now, the situation has become even critical with the abnormal rise in population, which has been getting more and more acute every year.

According to the present data, the population of the India’s youth has been doubled just in one decade. There were 33.5 million of India’s youth were unemployed and this grows up to 46.9 millions in the year 2011. The unemployment rate rises up from 17 percent to 20 percent, which is a huge problem in the Indian economy.

Experts said that over 20 percent of youth are jobless and this is affecting the growth rate of the country. The growth rate of the country is less than 5 percent and unemployment is one of the main causes behind this. This data is more shocking in the case of women as they do not want to work because of their family values, restrictions, responsibilities, and illiteracy. In this modern era, many people do not realize the importance of education in the life of women. They do not want them to come out of the four walls. This is also affecting the literacy rate of the country and leading to unemployment in the young women.

As per last census data, there are around 18 percent of young generations is seeking work in urban areas while in the rural areas, the share rises to over 21 percent. It is surprising that many of the senior citizens are still working in their advanced age. This is all because of the low level of social security for them and this is forcing them to work even after their retirement.

It is important for the government to focus on the youth education and skills. For this, it is vital to expand vocational training at the certified level. In order to improve the production from industry and farming it is important to improve the skills of the youngsters.

Unemployment is spreading its roots in India and its rapid growing population is making this situation more critical. It is important to control the population growth and generate new sources of employment for youth.
