Yahoo! India gets Govt approval for Internet Telephony

The Government of India has granted the permission to Yahoo! India for offering Internet telephony services from India.

Yahoo! would offer voice services in instant messenger services through its website in India. Net telephony in India expects a huge growth potential because of the larger support from its NRIs base.

According to joint research by the Internet and Mobile Association of India and market research firm IMRB International, India has growing number of Internet users and many portals are concentrating in Indian market. India had 37 million Internet users in September 2006. It was 33 million in March 2006.

On the other hand, Foreign Internet companies are focusing to provide local language content and tools for Indian users in different parts of India.

Earlier, Yahoo! has been launched plug-ins facility that helps users to chat on Yahoo Messenger in some of Indian languages too.
