Uganda: Cholera Cleaning Up Mess Left By El Nino Rains

story3 L4q5K 16419Just as always is the case following torrential rains during the onset of the rainy season, diseases like water borne diseases like cholera and typhoid wreck havoc.

In poor slum areas and Kampala suburbs, cholera is raging with so far 28 lives lost. New cases keep on emerging everyday.

The recent rains have left people dead and property destroyed. The landslides that greatly affected western Uganda left several homeless and 5 children dead. The Disaster ministry issued a warning towards people staying in risky areas to take refuge in churches and mosques since they are mostly situated on higher ground.

El nino rains predicted to increase with the peak expected towards end of the year, diseases like this if not remedied early could turn into an epidermic. Drinking boiled water, avoiding taking cold foods and keeping surroundings clean is all needs to be done. If people are not reminded to take these precautions then more deaths will be unavoidable.
