Tough talk with Pakistan –Reality or Rhetoric

When it comes to dealing with Pakistan, India ensures that it plans all its moves carefully. Same is happening in case of Sarabjit Singh who is hanging between life and death, after suffering fatal wounds. He was attacked in his prison cell in Pakistan last week.

Indian government has urged Pakistan to adopt a sympathetic view on Sarabjit Singh’s condition and release him. Maintaining the tempo of pressure on Pakistan, the Indian Government has urged Pakistani establishment to ensure that all prisoners languishing in its jail are taken care of properly.  Simultaneously, the government has urged the establishment to act tough on those who perpetrated the crime.

Pakistani agencies on their part had claimed that Sarabjit Singh was being offered the best possible treatment in a Lahore hospital and that there was no need to transfer him to any other place or even out of Pakistan. Replying to this, the Indian government has fired a fresh salvo hinting that the security concerns of Indians in Pakistani prisons are of prime concern to them and all such prisoners need to be provided ample security.

Pakistan has also dismissed the reports that they were considering sending Sarabjit Singh abroad for treatment. A key member of caretaker government in Pakistan has confirmed that the chances of sending Sarabjit Singh abroad for treatment were minimal. In his view, the best possible treatment was being provided to him at Jinnah hospital in Lahore.

Meanwhile situation is on the boil in India on this volatile matter.  Any such issue concerning Pakistan always strikes a chord with the common people in India and the latest incident is a live example of the same. Indian establishment too is under pressure to react to this provocation by Pakistan and show that it cares genuinely for its people.

Sadly however, it is a reality that India has not been able to bring this issue or any such related violations by Pakistan to appropriate conclusions. Similar situations prevailed at the time of beheading of Indian soldiers and the issue ended in much confusion with some within the Indian establishment hinting at hitting hard at the Pakistani establishment.

However, Pakistan never learns from its past experiences and India as a nation always fails to make it realize that things cannot be taken for granted as these concern the common well being of its citizens.

As a nation representing the World’s biggest democracy, Indian establishment should ensure that it is not taken for granted, especially when it comes to internal security matters of the country. Any such lethargic approach on part of the establishment only encourages the Pakistani government to take India for granted. The case of Indian prisoner Sarabjit Singh is a typical example of such misadventure where the Pakistani authorities realizing the lacklustre approach of Indian establishment resorted to such barbarism. Not being able to rein in fellow inmates of Sarabjit Singh is a typical case of inaction on part of the jail authorities in Pakistan and India must ensure that no repetition of any such incident occurs. The nation is watching and deserves an answer.
