The impact of Satyamev Jayate

If you are a citizen of India then it is impossible that you have not heard about Satyamev Jayate – the groundbreaking television series that created a big stir ever since it went on air on 6 May. Corruption and social evils are there at every nook and corner of the country at such root levels that it had stopped creating any impact on us Indians. In just thirteen episodes which had a duration of only one and half hours, Amir Khan and his production team did not just bring to the fore the disturbing social evils which strangle our society but it also strengthened a strong feeling of protests against such evils in the hearts and minds of the public.

Female infanticide, child sexual abuse, dowry, medical malpractices, honor killing, mistreatment of the physically challenged, domestic violence, pollution, alcohol abuse, casteism and untouchability, injustices meted out to old people and water crisis are various issues that were dealt with in course of three months. Staying in our comfortable homes, there are so many injustices and malpractices that we are unaware of. Satyamev Jayate generated interest on these topics among the Indian citizens, especially the youth of India and planted seeds of revolution in the hearts of everyone who followed this television series.

The impact of the first and the last episode

The far-reaching effects of Satyamev Jayate can be gauged from the phenomenal impact that the first episode dealing with female infanticide had on the country. Rajasthan Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot arranged an emergency meeting to devise a plan to check this inhuman practice and Madhya Pradesh Health Department suspended the license of 65 centers of Medical Termination of Pregnancy owing to their failure to produce final reports. These examples of the after effects of just the first episode are indicative of this television’s series’ immense contribution towards the building of a better India.

The show ended upon a note that urged and encouraged uncountable Indians to work for the establishment of the virtues of Justice, liberty, equality and fraternity that have been recommended in the Constitution of India by showing the efforts of some noble people who have strived to secure these virtues through their actions. By shedding light upon the works of these modern day Samaritans, Satyamev Jayate made the public realize how each of them can make a difference if they try.

What the audience has to say

“Satyamev Jayate opened my eyes to so many disturbing issues that grip India. It has infused in me a new vigor which constantly pushes me to do all that I can for the betterment of my nation. More shows like Satyamev Jayate should be produced.” – said Alpana Nayak, a home maker and an ardent follower of this television series.
