Syrian rebels gather in Istanbul for support

Syria and a number of political friends of the country have assembled in Amman, the capital of Jordan, a few weeks ago. The meeting aimed at developing a robust plan for encouraging the peace talks between the United States of America and Russia.

But, according to the latest report, while Syria was busy in discussing the issue with its diplomatic friends, another inconspicuous yet imperative congregation was arranged in Istanbul. Both Saudi representatives and around 15 members of the Higher Military Command of the Free Syrian Army took part in it. This gathering is being considered as the symbol of most of the revolutions, which are being organized to fight against the government of Bashar Assad, the President of Syria.

The second assembly basically represents the shadow war behind the rebellion of Syria. It was the first time when the Military Command of the rebel group and the Saudi officials met with each other at a hotel at the seashore as Saudi Arabia declared last month that it is ready to serve weapons to the rebels, informs a senior member of the Higher Military Command. Notably, it was an unofficial gathering and there was nothing formal about it.

Since last year, the smaller Persian Gulf state of Qatar used to provide most of the arms to the Military Command of the rebel group. However, Saudi Arabia has simply pushed it aside and come up as the major source of weapons for the opposition. Qataris were not at all involved in the entire affair though.

It is a vital change in Syria’s rebellion as the revolt sections preferred by Saudi Arabia and Qatar are quite different from each other. In Qatar, the majority of the rebel factions are known as Islamists. But when it comes to Saudi Arabia, it can be seen that the revolt groups comprise more moderate sections of the society. Though they are also Islamists, but are not that traditionalist like the Qataris. And it has become possible despite the fact that the Government of Saudi Arabia is highly conservative.

It is a positive indication for the rebellion to some extent as rising support to the moderate sections of the rebel group might take a toll on the tough conservative Islamist current developed within it and neutralize the entire revolt in proper way.

In a nutshell, the shadow war is going to strengthen the rebel to a great extent.
