Similarities between Tamil and Telegu culture that confuse us

Tamil is the local language spoken by the people of Tamil Nadu and Telegu is the local language spoken by the people of Andhra Pradesh. These are not the official languages but these are widely spoken across these states. These two are both part of South India and most of us confuse them to be the same.

Telegu culture

The people of these two states appear to be almost the same as they experience the same weather conditions throughout the whole year. The location of the states is just side by side.

Some top points of confusion are:

  • To the outsiders and foreigners the language of these states may sound all the same but the difference lies in the origin of the languages and the scripts.
  • The dress of the people of these two states is also almost the same. The men wear mostly shirts or T- shirts on top and wear a dhoti instead of pants. The dhoti is worn by simply wrapping it around the waist.  They specially wear white Dhotis instead of wearing any colourful ones. These mono coloured white dhotis are common in among all the males in these states. As for the girls they mostly wear saris, which are brightly coloured or multicoloured and pretty gorgeous.
  • Being followers of the Hindu religion the ceremonies and occasions are mostly the same with maybe some slight differences. The occasions like any kind of worship, marriage, etc are almost the same regarding the rituals, clothes, decorations, etc.
  • Both the people of Tamil Nadu and Andhra Pradesh are god fearing people and they are very sacred in nature in the sense that they are religion lovers and they perform religious ceremonies very particularly.

Tamil cuisine

One of the main differences between the people of Tamil Nadu and the people of Andhra Pradesh is their cuisine. The food of Andhra Pradesh is known to be mostly spicy. In fact Andhra Pradesh is famous for some of the spiciest food. Whereas Tamil Nadu is known for its less spicy food like Dhosa, Idli, etc. Another difference is that Andhra Pradesh being on the coastline serves various kinds of seafood as well. But that is not the case for Tamil Nadu as 85% of the natives of Tamil Nadu are vegetarians and Tamil cuisine mostly comprises of fat free and easily digestible food items.
