After detecting large-scale wrongdoing in the below poverty line (BPL) list in Bihar, Chief Minister Nitish Kumar said today that there is a need of new process to rectify the BPL list in the state.

Earlier, the irregularities in the BPL list had hindered the implementation of the coupon scheme to make the public distribution system (PDS) more efficient in the state. According to the scheme, the poor people in the BPL list were to be given coupons. With the help of the coupons, they could get grains and kerosene oil from any fair price shop at subsidized rates.

Later, it was reported that the name of many gazetted officers and political leaders were in the list while the poor had been left out.

On this irregularities, Nitish Kumar announced in the state assembly that the government has planned to take a series of steps to verify and rectify the list of BPL families. Moreover, the already distributed coupons to undeserving people would be canceled.

On the other hand, the main opposition party, RJD, staged a walkout after demanding to prepare fresh list and the old one should be scrapped.

This has happened for the second time that the state government has announced the rectification of the BPL list in Bihar. Earlier, in June last year, the first list was launched and some mistakes found in the list. Now, Nitish Kumar has set a deadline to prepare the revised BPL list till July.
