Microsoft unveils Office Mobile for iPhone

Better late than never! Microsoft has finally released its free app, Office Mobile, for iPhones in the U.S. It will later be released in other countries. But, do not rush to download it as it is only available now for Office 365 subscribers. The decision for limited launch perfectly fits in Microsoft’s business sense that might not want to disturb its revenues coming in from Office 365 sales. Moreover, it may not want to give enough reasons for people to use iOS.

Apart from the above, if you have the subscription for Office 365, you would be happier to learn that iOS does not count toward your limited quota to install PC/Mac. In fact, you would be able to install the iOS app on up to five iPhone devices. This app allows you to do light edits for your Word, Excel and PowerPoint files stored on SkyDrive. Using your iPhone, you may also create a new Word or Excel document (but not a PowerPoint document). So, you may utilize this app fully by downloading it now if you possess an iPhone and an Office 365 subscription, while there still are only Office web apps available for an iPad.

Microsoft has not revealed any such app version for Android users as yet. Also, it has not commented on any future versions of this app and what their additional features would be. Well, never know if the company has some unfinished items that could be provided later to users! But for now, there is just a minimal set of features available through this long-awaited iOS app. It is still a good beginning for the company to have launched this app as it is better than Google Drive in a way or more. Even if the app is a little better while working on spreadsheets, it is not yet comparable to other iOS apps, such as the Apple iWork app.

The newly launched Office Mobile is good to be tried out by Office 365 subscribers as it supports SkyDrive that most other office apps do not. Besides, there is nothing to lose as the app is free to be downloaded. You just need an iPhone 4, 4S or 5 that runs iOS 6.1 or a higher version. So, get on with it till you expect to get some more features loaded by Microsoft on its Office Mobile app.
