Indian hair trade: Are women being exploited?

hair tradeThe need for hair extensions and cosmetic products made with hair extracts in UK and US is growing at a very fast pace and turning Indian faith into fashion business, due to these hair extensions many major temples and exporters have earned $300m last year alone.

Hindu scriptures prescribe that you should shave your head once, and 85 per cent of the India’s billion-plus population, the hindus shave their heads at least once offering an open and rich market to hair dealers.

The Observer uncovers the startling fact that for this hair trade the main tagget are village women due to their waist-length tresses but the important point here is that that Tirupati and all the Indian temples collectively donate only 20 out of every 100 locks of finest hair sold abroad.

So the prime question is where is the rest of the hair coming from? Since there is no restriction or law related to trade of hair, so it’s for sure that many women here in India are being exploited, just for profit motives.
