India needs ideal political leaders, Do we have?

ideal political leaders

Several intellectuals consider Mahatma Gandhi as the most modern political thinker India has ever had because he had absorbed the best from the East and the West to evolve a magical political philosophy that created miracles in India. Now, the modern India is badly lacking the kind of leadership India had in glorious past days. Today the politics steeped in corruption and we find no one is there to act like Gandhi.

One of my teachers had asked me once during my college days that what is the basic difference between Netagiri and Netritva? I found myself completely unable to satisfy him with my answer. He later told me that Netagiri is a greatly widespread phenomenon in the political process in the country. However, Netritva is a great combination of positive characteristics such as vision, strength of mind, and ability to achieve a difficult task by mobilizing people from different sections for a common cause.

His answer forced me to think that do we have this kind of netritva in present India? The common perception of netas is not a very positive one today. The political leaders get far more attention and importance than they actually deserve. India needs good leaders in every sphere today however; the country needs better political leadership badly.

The good political leaders are made not born. India has developed the characteristics of political nepotism in it’s political process. Politics has become family business it seems. Some people certainly do become eligible leaders because they are born into a particular family. The concept of dynastic leadership is on the rise in Indian democracy.

The true political leadership is earned and not commanded or demanded. History says that the great political leaders gained the people’s love and affection during and beyond their lifetime. They were least self-conscious and full of Humility, respect for small and big people alike. They encouraged the followers to take initiatives and generally gave the credit of success to others. They looked always ready to take blame of failure upon oneself.

If we look back to our own country’s history, we see that the leadership with noble qualities such as Lokmanya Tilak, Mahatma Gandhi, Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose, Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru, Sardar Patel, Bhagat Singh and Veer Savarkar and many more. They have their enormous influence in arousing nationalist consciousness in the country for great social cause.

But now, the situation has been changed and if we talk about the political leadership in post-JP movement era and post-economic reforms era, we would hardly find the political leaders similar to the stature of even the leaders of post independence period till 1970s.

Do we have good political leaders at present? India is the country of young people. New India needs efficient, well qualified and the ideal personality to lead the country to go on right path of development.
