Indian Media should broaden its role as India is big country and the country of more than 6,00,000 villages. President A P J Abdul Kalam has suggested Indian media to get rid of urban biasness and excessive political reporting.

He said that there are more other areas where media should concentrate other than business and political reporting. Media should search its role as a development partner for rural India. There should be a code of conduct for media to ensure fair and accurate reporting.

He said further that you could not be a media of 300 million urban people. You have to be a media of 6,00,000 villages and 2,00,000 panchayats. The media should give importance to developmental politics and not to political politics.

He stressed on well-researched news reports. The correspondents and journalists should be from academic research institutions. There is a need of improving the quality of reporting and encourage the participation of journalists in several development missions.

There should be research wings in academic institutions to develop media personnel in reporting news, event analysis and highlights.

These institutions would help to make efficient journalists to carry out original research on topics of national interest and provide solutions to medium and long-term problems. The national media has to be transformed as media of billion people.
