The India-Iran-Pakistan gas pipeline could soon see light. As an Iranian delegation is set to visit India in July in a bid to finalize the accord on the over $ 7-billion pipeline to transport gas from the fuel-rich nation Iran to fuel-deficient countries India and Pakistan.

Petroleum Minister Murli Deora said that major concerns have been sorted out and pending issues like transportation fees and alignment would be discussed with Iran and Pakistan soon. Quoting Pakistan Prime Minister Shaukat Aziz’s views that the pipeline is essential for peace and progress, Mr Deora said the process is now on a fast track and very soon we could see launching of the pipeline, however he said no time frame has been set for such a massive project.

Initially, the 2,300-km long natural gas pipeline would carry around 60 million cubic meters of gas per day, divided uniformly between India and Pakistan.

India-Pakistan official meet by June-end or early July will be followed by a ministerial discussion to seal concerns on transportation tariff and transit fee payable to Pakistan for allowing hurdle- free passage of the pipeline to India. The three countries will then sign a Framework Agreement for the project.

India and Pakistan are trying to overcome decades of mistrust by collaborating on a pipeline that would satisfy needs of both the countries.
