He was hungry- Sentence reduced for Russian man who cannibalized his mother

The world seems to have lost its moral compass. People are committing heinous acts for ridiculous reasons, and not suffering much from the consequences. I am a firm believer that if you commit murder you deserve to do the time. A long time. Apparently, it’s not very long in Samara, Southern Russia.

This 27 year-old Russian man, Sergei Gavrilov, killed his 55 year-old mother because she refused to give him her pension money so he could go party it up gambling and drinking. He was so infuriated he smashed her head with a brick and then strangled her, I assume to make sure she was really dead. It gets cold in January in Russia so he put her out on the balcony, spent the next 2 weeks blowing through her money, and then when he discovered her body had frozen, he cannibalized her dead body, making soup and pasta from parts of her legs for over a month.

‘She was frozen, like meat in the freezer,’ he told police.

Apparently he was driven to eat his own mother’s flesh because he was starving. Or at least that’s what he claims, and because the judge believed his story his sentence was reduced from 15 years to 14 years and 3 months. How gullible can a person be? Had he eaten his mother out of a predilection for human meat he would have served 9 months longer. People have been driven to cannibalism out of necessity, but they were stuck in mountains far away from civilization. Amazing what people come up with as a defense for outrageous, criminal actions, especially since court psychiatrists deemed him ‘normal’.

With a past criminal record, he was only caught after police searched his house while investigating a stolen cellphone, and found the legless body of his mother on the balcony, in what amounted to a makeshift freezer.

One can’t get much sicker than that.
