Even the non-singers get sick at the Metropolitan Opera these days.
Zoe Caldwell is ill and will not perform the spoken role of the Dutchess of Krakenthorp during the Met’s new production of Donizetti’s “La Fille du Regiment,” which opens April 21.
Tony Award winner Marian Seldes, 79, will replace Caldwell during the run, the Met said Wednesday. Performance extend through May 16.
The Laurent Pelly production has appeared previously at London’s Royal Opera and at the Vienna State Opera, where the Dutchess was performed by Montserrat Caballe. The April 26 performance will be broadcast in high-definition to movie theaters around the world.
In recent weeks, Deborah Voigt, Ben Heppner, Ruth Ann Swenson, Sondra Radvanovsky and Marcello Giordani have missed performances at the Met because of illness.
