A woman in Florida has been charged with killing her 3-month-old all because of an on-line game. Though a similar outcome, the circumstances were slightly different. A 22-year-old Jacksonville, Florida mother, Alexandra V. Tobias, copped a guilty plea of second degree murder for killing her child. Tobias apparently was playing a game on Facebook called FarmVille when her baby started crying. Angered at the interruption, she grabbed her 3-month-old son Dylan Lee Edmondson and shook him to death. Actually, according to investigators, she shook the wee boy, had a cigarette to calm herself and went straight back to shaking him.
The world is in trouble with the youth of today (and some elder people who should know better) spending more time on the Internet twittering, Facebooking, playing on-line games and less time on personal interaction. The Internet can be highly addictive and as a result people are losing the ability to deal with reality. Virtual babies and Facebook applications like FarmVille are taking over people's lives and others are suffering the consequences. In some cases, parents have become so obsessed with these games they've neglected their children.
Earlier a South Korean couple who were found guilty of starving their baby to death while they spent 12 hour sessions in their local Internet cafe caring for a 'virtual child' . The mother of the 3-month-old baby was 25-years-old, but the 41-year-old father should have known it better.
She could get imprisoned for life, but Richard Mantei, the prosecutor in the case, said per state guidelines she could get 25 to 50 years in prison. Circuit Judge Adrian G. Soud has no idea what his ruling will be when Tobias is to be sentenced in December.
The guilty plea was in order to prevent the need for a jury trial.
These stories are tragic on many levels- but most young women are in no way emotionally equipped to care for a child. They are practically children themselves and obviously prefer to spend more time having fun than caring for a child.
