Young Chinese Mother Kidnapped And Forcibly Sterilized Because Of The One-Child Law
I thought China was growing up and seeing the error of its ways, but it seems I was wrong to think that. The 'one-child law' is still going strong in spite of the fact that there is a huge gender disparity in that country now, with men way outnumbering women. As a result of decades of gender selection they are having a terrible time trying to find wives.

But women are still being subjected to forced sterilizations, in spite of the problems, and 23-year-old Li Hongmei of Anhui, China is one of them. Kidnapped shortly after giving birth to her first baby in June, 2009, members from the family planning office took her to a hospital in Shuangfeng where she was forced to sign a consent form and was then sterilized. And when her mother, Yang Yonglian, went to report her missing daughter to the authorities, she was arrested and held in jail for 10 days for "hindering the course of official duties."
According to Chinese Human Rights Defenders (CHRD) who released the information regarding this travesty, Li is still hospitalized, since she became quite sick after the operation.
China's 'one-child law' has been in existence since the 1970s and has prompted the phenomenon of forced sterilizations of both men and women, and forced abortions up to and including the third trimester (9th month). People have also been fined heavily for giving birth to a second child.
In every province, city, village an annual quota of new births is set. In order to meet this quota representatives of the Office for population control resort to forced abortions (even in the ninth month), sterilization of women and men, huge fines of up to one or two years of annual wages for those who have a second child.Sociologists and economists have long warned about the dangers of a quickly aging population. Moreover, the preference for male children among farmers has led to a widespread practice of selective abortions, female foeticide and has also created a serious imbalance in the ratio between males and females. Because of this, different personalities are demanding that the state change the one child law, allowing at least two children per couple. Each year, however, the government reaffirms the "common good" of the On Child Act.
I guess China is going to hold on tight to the one-child law in spite of the dangers. They might just sterilize and abort themselves out of existence.
