Yemen's Cleric Al-Zindani- Child Marriage Bans Un-Islamic

POLITICS. .

What is happening to young girls in Yemen is beyond sickening. Sold into marriage as prepubescents to the highest bidder, regardless of the age of the child or the age of the husband-to-be, some as young as 8 have been married off to old goats as old as 80. Not only are these young children being subjected to the indignity of marriage at such a young age, they are dying in the process. They have died in childbirth, and some are dying after having sex. One young 13-year-old girl after her horrific wedding night encounter bled to death: her so-called husband tied her up and raped her. I can't even begin to imagine how frightening it must be for a little girl to be forced into a marriage against her will.

And even though the weak and ineffectual Yemeni government is trying to do something about it, by banning child marriages for girls under the age of 17, officials are being thwarted by the sick Islamic clerics who seem to think pedophilia wrapped up in marriage is okay.

Major cleric Sheik Adbul-Majid al-Zindani, has even gone as far as to claim the ban "threatens our culture and society and spreads immorality."

The whole idea of selling underage girls into marriage in spite of the physical and emotional trauma it might cause, is the height of immorality. Then again, this is the same man who apparently is the spiritual advisor of the king of evil Osama Bin Laden. Al-Zindani, who happens to be the most powerful and influential cleric in Yemen, is determined to squelch the bill by galvanizing the Yemeni people into action.

Speaking at a conference at Iman University in the Yemeni capital San'a, al-Zindani called on the dozens of radical clerics and Islamic law students in the crowd to opposed the draft law.

"You have to gather a million signatures ... that supports the demands of clerics," said al-Zindani. "If the issue calls on us to gather a million protesters, we'll organize it," al-Zindani said.

And there have been protests. Recently, mothers actually took to the streets in protest of the ban. Mothers, who are supposed to protect their children from harm, protesting against a law that would protect their baby girls.

Apparently, the main reasons behind marrying them off young is not only the money factor, but the young ones are more malleable and obedient and can bear more children. What a great idea, have a ton of kids they can't afford. Lets swell the population of an extremely poverty-ridden country.

The main problem in Islamic countries is the influence that clerics have on not only the governing body of the nation, but on the people as well. After all, when you have an influential cleric like al-Zindani tell you that a law banning child marriage is un-Islamic and that those who support the ban are apostates, who are you going to listen to? As religious as Muslims happen to be, they are going to listen to their clerics and not the laws of the land, so even if the law does pass, it will more than likely be ignored by the populace, and absolutely nothing will be done to enforce it. And so the little girls of Yemen will continue to die in childbirth and from internal injuries after having sex, and no-one will dare say a thing.
