Most people believe that winning the lottery will bring an end to all their troubles, but that's not always what happens. What is often the case, upon winning a large sum of money, is that the winner's troubles increase twofold. Most people are not adequately equipped to deal with an increase in wealth; they have no idea how to invest, and many wind up spending their millions within a short period of time, eventually ending up right where they began. With nothing. They are also not equipped to deal with all the friends, family and strangers that will suddenly appear out of nowhere to take advantage of this person's new found wealth. 43-year-old Abraham Shakespeare was one of those people. After winning a $30 million Florida lottery ticket in 2006, which he cashed in for a one time lump sum of $17 million, he would say "I'd have been better off broke." And he would have been, since his winnings brought him not just money but death.
Missing since April, 2009 his body was just discovered in the backyard of a woman who had contacted Shakespeare soon after he won the jackpot, about writing a book about him. She obviously had no intention of doing such a thing since her ulterior motives were to gyp him out of his money. And she managed to do that quite successfully, at least up until now.
Property records show she bought a $1 million home from Shakespeare for $655,000 and she acknowledged moving $2 million of his money into her bank account.
Although Shakespeare's body was found buried in 37-year-old Dorice "DeeDee" Moore's boyfriend's back yard (the house next door that she purchased with Shakespeare's money), she has only been charged as an accessory to first-degree murder. She claims she did not harm the man, but no-one else has been arrested at this point in time.
Police believe Shakespeare was killed on or about April 6 or 7, 2009, and apparently Moore wrote letters and used his cell phone to text family members and friends to make it seem as if he were still alive. Problem is, Shakespeare was illiterate, so although she had been a suspect in his disappearance all along, it wasn't until this past January that the whole murder started to unravel.
Investigators said in an affidavit released Tuesday that Moore asked an unnamed witness if he knew anyone who was awaiting sentencing to prison and would be willing to take the rap for killing Shakespeare in exchange for $50,000.Around the same time a few weeks ago, she told an unnamed witness — it's not clear if it was the same witness — to dig up the body and move it to another location, according to the affidavit. Authorities said she showed the person where the body was buried on Jan. 25 and provided a pickup truck to transport it, along with bleach and plastic sheeting. Police began digging up her backyard the next day.
Who knows if she killed Shakespeare, had an accomplice or whether she helped someone else murder the man. And who knows why she suddenly decided to dig up the body, but if she hadn't, poor Abraham Shakespeare would still be buried in Dorice Moore's back yard. In Shakespeare's case- a semi-literate, assistant truck driver- money did not make his life better, it just ended it.
