Wives have HIV, their husbands don't

LIFESTYLE. .

Indian feminists, backed by National Commission of Women and Women and Child Development ministry coupled with sick Indian society allegedly blame HUSBANDS if women were found HIV+. These women NGOs blame MEN for anything and everything that happen against women in order to claim more grants and benefits from the govt and UNIFEM. Here is a study conducted by Mumbai District Aids Control Society (MDACS) which says a different story. I appreciate the effort of DNA and Sumitra Deb Roy to bring this truth up in day light. This should be read together with the article Indian Women calling for Extra Marital Affairs

Mumbai: Discordancy among HIV-positive families, or a condition wherein a pair of prolonged sexual partners -- one positive and the other negative -- do not transmit the virus to each other seems to be on the rise in the city. The city AIDS control body, Mumbai District Aids Control Society (MDACS), is taken aback by the number of couples found to be discordant and are planning to initiate a detailed analysis into the reasons behind the cause.

Till April this year, 493 couples have already been detected as discordant. Of this, 195 cases were of wives who were HIV-positive and their husbands were HIV-negative, and 298 cases were of husbands who were HIV-positive and their wives HIV-negative. Last year till August, the number of discordant couples were as high as 1,225. Out of this, 722 husbands tested HIV-positive and their wives HIV-negative, while 503 wives tested positive even as their husbands tested negative for the virus.

Even as counsellors said that many women were being blamed for bringing the scourge to their homes because their husbands tested negative, experts said that promiscuousness could not be a reason at all.

"The data is surprising and has to be researched as there are many scientific reasons that could lead to discordancy," said Dr Harish Pathak, additional project director, MDACS.

Figures also suggest that a considerable number of pregnant women are found to be discordant. "In such cases, we counsel them and only after that we involve the spouse in the process and pursue him to undergo a test as well," said Alpa Sonje, assistant director, Integrated Centre for Testing and Counselling. Till April this year, 47 pregnant women have been found to be positive even as their husbands were negative.

"In many such cases, women remarry and only during their first pregnancy do they find out that they are HIV positive," said Dr Alaka Deshpande, head, ART Centre, JJ Hospital. "We have had cases where women were unaware that their husbands had died of HIV/AIDS," she said. She however said that it will require a detailed study to say that the number of discordant couples is actually on the rise.Deshpande explained that discordancy could also be because in some cases transmission efficiency due to sex is low. "Also, innate immunity of vaginal mucosa provides natural immunity to women," she said. "As for men, the transmission chances from women are very low," she added.
