Witnesses say a radical Islamic militia controls most of Somalia’s third-largest city after three days of fighting in which dozens of people have died.
Ali Abdullahi Egal of Fanole Human Rights Group says fighting between the Islamic militia and a clan militia killed 10 people Friday in the southern port of Kismayo.
Kismayo residents say more than 50 people have died in the fighting since Wednesday.
Resident Sahra Haji Ahmed says Islamic militia are in the city center, and that the sound of gunshots is coming from only a corner of the city. She says the fighting was heaviest earlier Friday but has since eased.
Government officials say they have no comment. The government is battling an 18-month-old Islamic insurgency.
