Why the Auto Industry Should Not Be Bailed Out

POLITICS. .

GM, Ford and Chevrolet are asking the US Congress for a $34 billion bailout in order to stay in business.

They should not get it, or rather the unions should not get it. The American United Auto Workers has forced American's auto industry into making cars second and running a welfare state first. The union has pushed GM, Ford and Chevrolet into creating such capital-killing schemes such as a "job bank"; where laid-off workers are paid 90% of the salaries of sit and play cards in a room. The UAW has forced - through its draconian striking practices that are aided by are pro-union un-constitutional legislation - the "Big Three" into running expensive retirement programs, unemployment insurance and health care.

That's not the end of it: besides demanding welfare and health insurance - which are fine in moderation and maybe something businesses should do - the union was prohibited America's auto industry from even attempted efficient production. The unions operate under the fallacy that there is limited work, thus they seek to "spread the work". This has lead to inefficient specialization of labor. "The Big Three' are not allowed to run dual-use plants that allowed for production of both car A and V. Toyota, for instance, runs such efficient plants in America that allow it to quickly respond to consumer needs by changing production line manufacturing. Unions have destroyed American's auto industry and now they want to rid us of secret unionizing ballots so they can do to other American industries what they have done to Detroit.

The real people seeking a bailout are the unions. If GM, Ford and Chevrolet go bankrupt it will mean that they will shed many employees and restructure their firms along productive lines: this translates to no more free ride for Big Union. The unions are terrified of losing their stranglehold over the auto industry and rather than risk lose it they would have the American tax prayers pay for their plunder. Every time GM made any significants profits, rather than allow management to save those earning the unions would demand that it's only "fair" that the workers get it all. They would strike with incredible zeal. Well, they have earned what we see in front of us: A pathetic auto industry in the great nation that once was a leader in car manufacturing.

NO BAILOUT FOR BIG UNION!
