Why is Kenya hiding Kabuga?
Perhaps not many people would quickly reckon this name – Felicien Kabuga, but he is one man who has remained elusive for years with Kenya remaining as his possible hide out. The Kenyan government has been put been put on the spot severally over Kabuga but there has never been solid evidence that the infamous man could possibly be enjoying life somewhere in a protected place in Kenya.

The latest allegation that the fugitive wanted for crimes against humanity is Kenya was made by the US Ambassador-at-Large for War Crimes Stephen J. Rapp on Monday who accused both the Kibaki and Moi governments of refusing to hand over the fugitive, with a price on his head, to the International Criminal Tribunal for Rwanda (ICTR). He said the US came close to arresting Kabuga in 1997 but its efforts were thwarted by the government of the time. At that time influential people in that regime aided Kabuga's escape when the net was closing in on him.
We have heard of instances when Kabuga could attend big functions organized by influential people yet the government has a nerve to say the man has already left Kenya. The government has insisted that Kabuga already left the country but details remain scanty on his departure.
According to the envoy, there was sufficient evidence that the fugitive, accused of the massacre of innocent Tutsis and moderate Hutus in the 1994 Rwandan genocide, was residing in Kenya. It is very sad that some Kenyan politicians also seek advice from Kabuga.
