Why is Bangalore becoming the suicide capital of India?
On Monday, the 7th of July 2008, Bangalore registered five suicides. In one such case, a young couple signed a suicide pact because they were in deep debt and killed themselves as well as their eight-month-old baby. Unfortunately such news makes no headlines any more. My mother who is visiting me from Delhi says,” why does one hear of this so often in this city? Isn’t Bangalore supposed to be the city of opportunities and wealth”? Honestly I had no answer.

Why is this happening? Experts are of the opinion that a major chunk of the city’s population suffers from loneliness. Loneliness because the migrant population (coming from different states) which comes to Bangalore are away from their families, and thus do not have the cushioning effect that elders and family members provide.
Some of the possible steps which can be taken to prevent such cases in the future would be to provide intense counseling sessions and suicide prevention help-lines. Is there anything else you can think of?
