Why do Muslims kill Muslims? Much of the ongoing violence in Iraq is sectarian in nature, and has absolutely nothing to do with the so-called foreign 'occupiers'. They have been killing each other for years now, Shiites killing Sunnis, Sunnis Killing Shiites- it's a never ending circle of violence. And neither side has any shame in terms of who, when or where they attack. Men, women and children have been victims. People have been targeted at weddings and funerals, at schools, in busy marketplaces, even at Mosques, and nobody blinks. Sure, the victims justifiably wail and mourn new deaths, but who ultimately is to blame? And why does it continue, sickeningly, day after day?
This week it has been the Shiites who have been targeted. 3 bombs in one week. It's the Al-Arbain solace at Karbala, and Sunni suicide bombers are having a hey day with the masses of sitting ducks on their way to Karbala. Masses of pilgrims are easy targets for those aiming to kill, for whatever warped reason they see fit to kill. The latest massacre claimed at least 20 dead and over 100 injured. Someone on a motorcycle set off a bomb placed in a cart that the cyclist was hauling. A military vehicle with a bomb attached exploded on Tuesday killing 3 and wounding 21. On Monday, a female suicide bomber infiltrated the procession and blew herself up in a rest station for pilgrims.
The rest station included a security search area, and the bomber had been ushered into the tent set aside for women when the device was set off."We were serving the people when the attack happened inside a search tent for women," Allawi Hassan, a staff member, told reporters.
"The moment the explosion happened I felt as if I was flying through the air. I saw men, women and children wounded before I fainted. I then found myself in hospital."
She murdered more than 40 people, at least 6 of them were children and 5 were women. Innocent children, murdered because they happen to be worshipping the wrong kind of Islam.
I realize that Sunnis and Shia have differing opinions regarding their religion, but to kill each other over it? I also am aware that there are politics wrapped up in religion when it comes to Iraq, and that al-Qaeda and others are attempting to fight against what they see as Shia domination of the Iraqi government, but again, to kill each other over religion doesn't seem very righteous or pious.
When are they going to allow each other to worship whichever way they please. They are all Muslims, after all.
