We have different PDS (public distribution system) for rural area...We have special Panchayati raj for rural areas...but gender biased 498A and domestic violence law is same for all over India.
How many brides are burnt alive in Kolkata in last 5 years....I can't remember may be some incidents in jhopar-patti. But 498a law is being misused by many times. Lodging a complaint can land husband and inlaws into police station/jail..ironically without any evidence..just verbal comments. Meantime wife and her parents would come to house and handpick..(read loot) any item in house..in presence of police only. She can take anything from her husbands belonging..just giving a bit share to police. Then only husband and her inlaws get bail(may be). In worst cases if groom side doesn't get effective lawyer ..they may have to spend in jail for weeks.
This law is against democracy...this law doesn't make woman empowerment., this law is made to harnessed people. After few years you may be proven innocent...but there is no legal punishment for false allegation.
It is true, wives are being kicked out their husbands home for dowry...but this is mainly in rural area, and the victims do not know about the 498a.
The main reason to keep the act to have source of money for women organisation and women ministry...and of course urban women. Being educated and financially independent they ask for half share of husband's property...it tax-free and hassle-free income for them.
Though supreme court has announced this law creates legal terrorism, still the gender-biased law persists because of wrong presentation of women organisation.
