What is The Hot News Today?
A new scam unearthed? Another bomb blast? One more gang rape? Most space of National dailies and media is hogged by the high voltage news relating to corruption, terrorism and rape. A recently conducted survey of people in 26 countries by opinion research consultancy Globescan, for BBC World showed that most talked about topic this year among Indians was corruption. Terrorism, climate change, rising prices were other favourite topics of discussions. Rape was not preferred subject of drawing room chat though the topic found prominent space in media discussions.

A scam doesn’t happen in a day, it takes months and years to become full blown. The scam masters are given freehand to bring the scam to a respectable proportion till then everybody echoes ‘all is well’. Scams, like sports have become very competitive, amount involved goes on increasing with each new scam.
Bofers scam 64 cr
Urea scam 133cr
Food Grain scam 950 cr
Stock Market scam 4000cr
Satyam scam 7000cr
Stamp Paper scam 43000cr
CWG scam 70000cr
2G Spectrum scam 1.67lac cr
Food grain scam 2lac cr
(estimated)
Increase in scam amount is quite justifiable because of galloping inflation.
After a scam is brought to light, the Govt allows sufficient time to its perpetrator to destroy evidence, prepare his defence as in the case of CWG and 2G Spectrum raids. For public consumption a Govt Spokesperson announces ‘Kisi ko Nahi Baksha Jayga’. In the face of public outrage, a committee is constituted by the Prime Minister to investigate the wrong doings preferably by a retired judge of Supreme Court. The opposition cries foul and demand JPC probe. The Govt weighs its strength in the light of political fallout on the issue. After several extensions a report is submitted to the Govt. No one is punished as a big scam is team work that involves influential people and political bigwigs. It is a collective culpability. Dust settles in due course, it is time to raise hue and cry for a newly unearthed scam.

Terrorism is another hot topic of discussion which is highlighted by the media when guns boom in J&K or a bomb explodes somewhere in the country. The security agencies again rush to the spot to find out the ‘quality’ of explosive used in the blast- RDX, low intensity explosive, IMD, etc. The State administration hurriedly announces arrest of a few suspects, who always turn out innocent. Probe goes on for several months, real culprits are seldom caught. The Central Govt blames State Govt for security lapses, the state Govt passes the buck to the Central Govt for the terror attack because of non specific, non actionable input. Life is back on rails till another blast rocks the country.

Gang rape of women in a moving vehicle is forte of Delhi youth. Everyday hapless women are targeted by NCR goons who prowl for their victim in the dead of night. Delhi has become rape capital of the country. Several cases of rape incidents remain unreported because of social stigma. Media, however, highlights safety of women every time a high profile rape case is reported. A panel of eminent citizens, activists appear on Television to condemn the incident and sympathise with the victim. Several cases remain unresolved, the audacity of rapists remain intact.
Crime whether it relates to corruption, rape , terrorism or some other act needs to be handled with iron hand. Weak administration only encourages such nefarious acts.
