What does Lula want now?
Since there was the conquest of Latin America by the Portuguese and Spanish, the story was always the same: a strong division between countries, even after their independence.

The British Empire during a long time, ever interfered in the internal affairs of many Latin American countries, especially in South America, one of the reasons why the Paraguayan War was happened influenced in certain level by British interests.
However, with so-called Monroe Doctrine, the U.S. managed to increase its influence in the region. The "America for Americans" was one of the consequences of the U.S. approach with the other American countries. Moreover, this policy can be viewed as expansionary.
Who ever heard the term "Banana Republic"? Actually this pejorative term means the submission of a corrupt government and oppressive to the interests of the United States.
The disunity that existed between the countries of the region generated a very large gap between countries; they saw each other as competitors rather than as allies.
During the twentieth century, especially after the Second World War, Latin America has become a target for the interests of the United States and the Soviet Union. Leftist governments here were dropped, and countries like Brazil and Chile have seen military dictatorships supported by the Americans to ascend.
With the democratization process, there was a new opportunity for many countries to rethink its foreign policy. In Brazil, it was an excellent opportunity to seek a closer union among the countries of South America
Over the past 25 years, Brazil is getting closer to its neighbors. Mercosur is an example. Recently an agreement was signed between member countries by increasing economic and political integration of Argentina and Brazil and other member countries (and guests).
In practice this means what? Is that Brazil wants to take the place that was once the British Empire or the United States? The answer is no.
Further integration of South American countries and also Latin American countries is the rise of these countries in the international arena, marked by multipolarity. And what does Brazil get?
In addition to greater stability in the continent, this approach tends to allow an economic, political and social that will transform this region. With a market of more than 600 million inhabitants, trade between these countries tends to strengthen the global economies, making them less vulnerable to the interests of major powers.
And this is the project that Lula will chase after he ceases to be president of Brazil. As Lula has good relations with the vast majority of other Latin American leaders, his intention is to seek new forms of regional integration, and deepening existing ones.
What is Lula wants to help Brazil boost its influence not only to secure new markets. He wants Brazil to help other Latin American countries to improve their living conditions through regional integration, strengthening the region overall.
Of course it will not be easy, but considering the popularity of Lula in South America and Latin America, also it will be no difficult task.
Only in this way is that part of the world will be able to advance economically, politically and socially; through integration, not disunity.
