Wall Street is down in early trading after disappointing results from Google Inc. and Microsoft Corp. offset a more upbeat quarterly report from Citigroup Inc.
Google’s results were lower than expected, the result of the weakening economy hurting advertising revenue. And Microsofit missed forecasts by a penny.
Citi, meanwhile, reported a $2.5 billion second-quarter loss due to write-downs tied to deteriorating credit markets. That was still better than analyst estimates and renewed hope about a financial sector comeback.
The Dow Jones industrials fell 17 points to the 11,429 level. Some pullback was to be expected after the blue chips’ two straight triple-digit gains.
