Sunderland fans threw bottles and coins at an opposing player Saturday, and hundreds stormed the field after the victory over rival Newcastle in the Premier League. There were 29 arrests and no serious injuries.
Police officers on horseback were attacked with fireworks outside the stadium and one horse sustained minor burns.
The violence came during and after the 2-1 victory in northern England, Sunderland’s first at home over Newcastle in 28 years.
Spectators pelted Newcastle midfielder Joey Barton as he prepared to return in the game’s last six minutes after serving a six-game ban. Police had to protect him while he warmed up on the sideline. Barton angered fans in his response by kissing Newcastle’s club badge.
Sunderland manager Roy Keane said his team’s fans at the Stadium of Light deserved a chance to celebrate.
“If you think I am going to sit here and criticize Sunderland supporters, then you are wrong,” he said.
Sunderland could face punishment from the governing Football Association.
“Hopefully the FA will go easy on us,” Keane said. “Supporters have to enjoy it, it’s been a long while since they’ve had something to really celebrate and they have to enjoy these things. If they’ve overstepped the mark we will do something about it.”
