US Muslim Woman Gets Marriage Annulled From Her Gay Green-Card Seeking Husband

POLITICS. .

People get married for their green cards (permanent resident card) all the time in the U.S. It's not legal, but it happens quite often. Most of the time, both parties are aware of the arrangement. Some will do it as a favor for a friend, others will do it for monetary compensation, but every once in a while some hapless individual will get duped into marrying someone that turns out to only have married for the green card. For a woman looking for love and marriage this can be devastating, as 31-year-old Samina Khan discovered.

Samina Khan, a Long Island, NY pharmacist, married 35-year-old Farrukh Khan thinking he was as devout a Muslim and as successful as she was. They initially met at an event for single professional Muslims two years ago. When she found his profile on an equivalent of an E-Harmony.com for Muslims dating site, they arranged to meet again on what is called a "speed date" and started going out together immediately. It couldn't have been more perfect- they got along famously and he claimed to be a "network engineer" and co-owner of a restaurant netting in excess of $100,000.00 per year, plus he was Muslim. What more could a devout Muslim woman want? Their courtship was as quick as their initial speed date, and within a very short time they were married. That was in June 2008. Samina even obliged him by marrying sooner than anticipated so that Farrukh could go back to his native Pakistan to see his sick father. Had they not married, he wouldn't have been able to return to the U.S.

But what she thought was a dream come true- marriage to a devout, successful Muslim, soon turned into a nightmare.

"Clearly, he just did this for a green card," Samina said. "The day after the [marriage] paperwork was in, he just ignored me."

For weeks, Samina said, she ignored the obvious signs, including their bizarre living arrangement. Samina moved with Farrukh into a one-family house in Westbury he was sharing with his friend, the friend's wife and their son.

Samina said she drove the men every morning to the train station and they would return very late at night. She also said that Farrukh and his friend shared clothes and cash and bought groceries together.

All the while, over the course of seven months, the marriage was never consummated.

"It was completely miserable," Samina said.

She learned that Farrukh had been married twice before and engaged four times, according to the documents.

She also learned he was no computer whiz, but a part owner in a small Brooklyn restaurant.

During the course of their marriage, he contributed only $4,000 to their savings account, while Samina paid for everything else, including the wedding for 500 guests and Farrukh's trips to Pakistan.

But the main reason she finally asked for the marriage to be annulled was the fact that she discovered him in a compromising situation: she caught Farrukh 'making out' in her car with a man.

She told The Post yesterday that the smooch, which her husband denied, was the proof she needed to convince her that her marriage was a loveless, sexless sham.

"Once I saw him in the car, that's when I had enough," said Samina, who was represented by the law firm of Dominic Barbara. "I left that day."

Farrukh, of course, denied everything including that the marriage was a sham, claiming that "The allegations are totally incorrect," "I was married once before. I didn't lie. She knew it." The article doesn't mention, however, whether he denied the kiss. Either way, the marriage was a sham if it was never consummated, and one then has to wonder why it wasn't. I think poor Samina unfortunately made the wrong choice and will probably think twice before she marries anyone who doesn't already have a green card.
