Two digital billboards found South of the American border question waiting Northbound shoppers and day tourists a question worth pondering.

The digital query which fades in and out between banks, restaurants, department stores, drug rehab centers and lawyers business announcements asks one simple question to it's viewers:

``Do you want to have your baby in the United States?''

Dr. Jose Duran an obstetrician and gyncologist of Nogales Arizona claims he is offering superior service, the automatic American citizenship generated to the child is a simply bonus in his package deal.

"People don't come for the citizenship. They come for the services and the technology that in some other places they don't have.'' -Dr. Jose Duran

The truth is many women from Mexico have traveled to doctors and hospitals in U.S. border states to give birth. In the early 1960s, some of the first factories in neighboring Sonora offered medical insurance that covered the cost of maternity services in the United States.

It is also true that in the last 15 years many Mexican women, rich and poor, have traveled to the United States in the last weeks of their pregnancy knowing they can work the American system.

I have heard of wealthy women packing up their families 6 weeks before their due date and checking into American hotel suites. On the flip side, I have heard of poor women waiting until the first contractions and then making a mad dash across the border for any U.S. hospital emergency room. Some women will pay cash for their delivery services, others will enjoy the free benefits of charitable American hospitals. Rich, poor, or in between they will all receive their new bundle of joy registered as an American citizen before signing their medical release forms.

Dr. Duran denies keeping any sort of record on how many women from Sonora come to his office because of his ads. And he said those who do don't necessarily make their decision after seeing his advertisement.

He said both countries benefit from what each has to offer. The good Doctor also defended his services by stating the many Americans who come to Mexico looking for inexpensive, yet high quality dentistry. We should be good neighbors, nobody complains about Mexican dentists treating American citizens.

Your right, Dr. Duran, nobody complains about the dentists in Mexico treating all those American teeth, but then again, Mexico doesn't offer automatic citizenship even to it's citizens, much less to every tooth of every American it treats.
