The United States has amended a travel advisory cautioning against travel to parts of Kenya, saying threats of violence have “dramatically receded” following a political power-sharing deal.

A deeply flawed Dec. 27 presidential election unleashed weeks of violence that killed more than 1,000 people and tarnished Kenya’s reputation as one of Africa’s most stable and tourist-friendly countries. After weeks of bloodshed and mounting international pressure, President Mwai Kibaki and opposition leader Raila Odinga agreed last month to share power.

“Threats of political demonstrations and violence have dramatically receded,” the State Department said Friday. The temporary suspension of the Peace Corps program in Kenya was also under review.

The United States still urged caution, recommending that Americans living in or traveling to Kenya “evaluate their personal security situation in light of continuing, potential threats from terrorism and crime.”

It is safe to visit Kenya. Sometimes the advisories aren’t accurate and people who feed off the violent scenes on tv actually believe that the entire country is affected by violence, I don’t blame them, but here is an accurate view on things. It is unfortunate that Kenya experienced all that it did in December 2007, but things in Nairobi were worse off than in Mombasa for example. The tourists that did decide to stay back anyway, enjoyed a peaceful holiday by the beach at their resorts, unaware of what was actually happening on the streets, unless of course they turned on the tv. Tourism is picking up once again with many countries lifting the bans and people encouraging tourists to visit our beautiful country. It may be unimaginable to many people, but there were people going about their normal lives (as normal as it could be) during the December 07/January 08 period. There have been very many visitors in the past few months who have enjoyed their stay here and are looking forward to visiting Kenya again.
