The bodies of eleven men and one woman were found dumped along the highway in the area known as "The Yescas", which divides the cities of Matamoros and Valle Hermoso, Tamaulipas, near the northeastern Texas-Mexico border.
According to the local prosecutor, passing motorists alerted the police of the presence of corpses.
The Ministerial Police Commander in Valle Hermoso, Juan Jose Mancha, said the bodies were taken to the Forensic Medical Service of Matamoros and so far have not been identified.
Mancha said the victims were each between the ages of 20 and 35. No shell casings were found along the highway, which suggests that the perpetrators "had only chosen the place to throw the blindfolded bodies."
The corpses each showed signs of torture and high caliber gunshot wounds to the body as well as a single coup de grace bullet to the head.
Some of those killed were wearing white shirts, emblazoned with the letter "Z", in apparent relation to Los Zetas.
In Tamaulipas, the Gulf Cartel has waged war with it's former armed wing, the Zetas, which has caused well over two hundred deaths this year alone.
Last night the city council of the border city of Reynosa (Tamaulipas) had alerted the public via Twitter of armed clashes in different parts of the city.
