Turkish Groom Kills Relatives By Accident- Shooting AK-47 At Wedding
Although I consider myself a moderate conservative, and I certainly understand the reasoning behind those who promote the 2nd Amendment (the right to bear arms)but I am definitely for gun control. There are far too many people in this world who should never be allowed to own a gun; and it's not just wackos and criminals that I am referring to. There are also many people who are just too stupid or oblivious to the fact that if you shoot a gun into the air, those bullets have to come down and they have no control, whatsoever, over where or what or whom they land on. They used to do it in the wild, wild west. Now, there are many cultures that, for some odd and unknown reason, like to shoot off guns as a form of celebration.

I remember when I lived in L.A., especially on new Year's eve, at the stroke of midnight you could suddenly hear the loud cacophony of firecrackers, fireworks and guns. I lived in a racially diverse neighbourhood, and this was customary for many of my Mexican and Latino neighbours. The next day, you would always read about the results of the previous night's revelries in the morning paper- several people had been inadvertently killed by stray bullets. What goes up must come down, but it never seemed to stop the practice, because it continued every year for the duration of my stay there.
Apparenly, it's also a cultural custom in some African and Middle-Eastern countries, and officials seem unable to stop the practice. It also happens in Turkey, and in this very tragic case, not only were eight people wounded but several were killed. At a wedding no less. And the culprit was the groom. Apparently, during his wedding celebration in Akcagoze, a village in southeastern Turkey, the groom grabbed an AK-47, of all things, and aimed the weapon in the air. But in this case, he lost control of the gun which wound up firing at guests and wounding many including two of his aunts and his father. The aunts and his father died later, in the hospital. The man was arrested, so not only did he lose his father and his aunts, he has in essence lost his own life, all for a custom that police have tried to ban but have had little success.
Perhaps this tragic event will convince others that guns have no place at weddings or other celebrations, although I have a feeling it won't make any difference at all, since we always think it will never happen to me.
