Leaders of a Southern California Indian tribe are meeting with sheriff’s deputies to calm tensions over the killings of three people on the reservation.

Tribal Chairman Robert Salgado began Friday’s session by expressing hope for conciliation.

Also present at the meeting are mediators from the federal Bureau of Indian Affairs and the Justice Department.

The meeting comes four days after two people opened fire on security guards outside the tribe’s casino and led deputies on a chase into the hills of the reservation southeast of Los Angeles.

Authorities say the man and woman fired at a sheriff’s helicopter and SWAT team before officers killed them.

Deputies also killed a former tribal chairwoman’s son on the reservation last week.
