Sacramento Mayor Heather Fargo’s election night party turned tragic when a massive tree branch crashed down and sent a supporter to the hospital.
Fargo says several people were initially trapped under the 30-foot limb when it fell Tuesday onto a restaurant patio. One woman was apparently injured and was taken to a hospital.
A former city fire chief, Julius Cherry, was at the party at Vallejo’s Mexican restaurant and helped emergency crews evacuate the restaurant.
Fargo called it a “freak accident.” Dozens of supporters were preparing to move the party to her campaign headquarters.
Fargo was trailing challenger and former NBA All-Star Kevin Johnson in early returns, although neither had more than 50 percent of the vote.
