Trauma of losing a child

POLITICS. .

This is not a story taken out from a Bollywood blockbuster. It may seem unrealistic but this is a true story which has given shocks of their lifetime to the parents of the child.

And more surprisingly, this is not an isolated story in Mumbai. Child-lifting has become an order of the day, rather than an exception, in Mumbai, mostly in the local government-run hospitals. The stories of such cases are swelling with each passing day.

These are real stories that had happened, being repeated again and again in Mumbai without any relief to the parents who lose their newly born children for no fault of theirs. Their only fault is that they cannot afford the luxury of a private hospital and depend on a government-run hospital for delivery.

Who steals the newly born children and what purpose is still an enigma which is haunting the police department. And as far as recovering the lost child, it is a near impossible mission.

Read a real story to get the real picture.

This is the story of one Prakash Chauhan, 30, and wife Vidya, 28, who lost their baby boy just two days after he was born at JJ hospital in Mumbai in 2003. The baby was stolen but never to be found.

The Chauhan family celebrates the birthday on January 12 every year. The entire house is decorated, the candles are lit, the cake is cut and chocolates are distributed among the neighbours. The supposedly happy occasion is deeply scarred by a touch of irony though. And the only person missing from the party is the birthday boy. He has not been part of the party for the last seven years.

Vidya's child was born on January 12, 2003. After two days, the baby was stolen. The family had lodged a police complaint after he was stolen, but nothing happened. The boy was named Sahil. The Chauhan family still lives in the trauma of losing their child.

It was seven years ago. The story has become far too common in the civic hospitals of the city now. Last week, two-month-old Mishra was stolen from VN Desai Hospital. A year ago, Mohini Nerurkar's four-day-old baby was stolen from Sion hospital and they are still fighting with the hospital administration.
