It wasn’t as easy as it looked. Tilda Swinton’s first attempt at making clay impressions of her hands _ part of a fundraising effort to help restore Venice’s St. Mark’s Square _ barely left a print.

“It’s going to look like a bird’s hand,” the Oscar-winning actress said Wednesday after successfully pressing her hands deeper into the clay. She then scratched her name on the tablet, adding a heart shape for flourish.

Palm prints of the stars are being collected at the Venice Film Festival by the Italian automaker Lancia, and will be auctioned on e-Bay to raise funds to restore St. Mark’s Square.

Swinton stars with George Clooney and Brad Pitt in Ethan and Joel Coen’s “Burn After Reading,” which was being shown at the Venice festival. The filmmaking brothers did their own prints on a joint slab.

Swinton won a supporting-actress Oscar for “Michael Clayton.”
