Early this week the media highlighted the burning of a sikh student's turban at Hightstown High School in New Jersey by a senior, who has been arrested on charges of arson and criminal mischief. There have been, in past few years, number of such incidents in America, Europe hitherto known as the citadels and guardians of "freedom". There have been incidents of intolerance towards muslim girls wearing hijab or head scarf. The matter has compounded more because of the governments' attitude especially in France and England to perceive turban/hijab wearing as a reluctance to completely accept local national culture.
Now in india the same logic is being applied in Punjab by the Akal Academy in Sangrur, in forcing non sikh students to wear turban. Around 93 students' parents are forced to take their children out of the school. Will the concerned people understand the utter stupidity of this action. It will belittle their own fight to wear turban by sikh students elsewhere in the world.
