The Mob In Bulgaria
Yes, Virginia, there is a mob in Bulgaria.
As with all other Eastern European nations, Bulgaria in the past 18 years has undergone enormous changes: an increase in freedom, democracy, wealth, and corruption. The latter inflicts even more "advanced" nations such as the United States and France. But there is something that is currently plaguing Bulgaria that is quite unique: an out-of-control mob.

Even the United States has a mob, but the mob in America is confined to picking on New York city construction and immigrant businesses in immigrant neighborhoods. Further, the mob in America does not act with impunity, just recently hundreds were rounded up and imprisoned. This is how most nations deal with the mob. But in Bulgaria the mob is king and does not confine itself to matters such as getting money from big-city construction.
In Bulgaria the mob gets involved with matters such as real estate deals and the millions that come from European Union aid, making sure it gets its cut. And to enforce its domain the mob is not afraid to kill politicians.
Last year, the Bulgarian mob went after the chair of a municipal electoral committee and set her home on fire. They have firebombed several garages of mayors. And a mayor of a central Bulgarian town who crossed the mob was shot seven times and killed. Unfortunately he is not alone: the chairman of a City Council of Nesebur (on the Black Sea port) was also killed. The mob is obviously without restraint and on a killing and intimidating spear.
As MP Atanas Atanasov put it to The New York Times: "Other countries have the mafia." "In Bulgaria, the mafia has the country." It increasingly looks like it.
One final note: what does they mob go by in Bulgaria: "thick necks". What does that mean you ask? For their "muscular appearance linger in neon-lighted nightclubs". These men are now taking over the Bulgarian public sphere through public office, of course.
Where is Bulgaria headed when the mob becomes the state?
