The Lies of the Tunisian Regime
Tunisia's dictator Ben Ali. A footnote: Ben Ali was a Tunisian diplomat in Poland during the Solidarity Uprising. May he be a first hand witness once more to a democratic cleft.

Arabs regimes truly hate their people. Nothing else could explain the utter contempt they demonstrate for the intellect of Arabs. The corrupt regimes, all undemocratic bar Lebanon, really think that their crude propaganda is believed by the masses.
The Arabs are much wiser. They know they are ruled by a bunch of aging dictators with selfish interest divergent from national gains and that their sole concern is maintaining their power. The region's politics has been made insufferable by opaque Arabs regimes which remain never go away but just oscillate. Egypt has been ruled by the same tyrant for nearly thirty years. Morocco saw King Hassan pass away only for his son to take the reign of power. Ditto in Jordan. No change in the House of Saud expect which royal is coroneted king. And in Tunisia Ben Ali has been de facto president for life since 1986.
Arab regimes exploit nationalism or fears about an Islamist takeover or other cynical schemes to maintain their power. But these have grown tired. Regimes do not even deliver basic necessities now and distractions are no longer carry the day.
So in the face of the most significant public uprising in Tunisian history since the French occupation, the regime - instead of recognizing the legitimate grievances of the people - has resorted to lies. Dozens of Tunisian youth have been killed by the thuggish secret police, but the regime accuses courageous Tunisians of being "foreign agents" and "mercenaries" and "extremists" engaged in "terrorist acts". And the sad bit is that they actually expect Tunisians to believe this drivel and side with a corrupt autocrat and his words over their brave neighbors and what they see on a daily basis.
Somebody should teach the Arab regime liars and propagandists the American aphorism, "Who are you going to believe? Me or your lying eyes?"
