'The Japanese Wife', is knitted with threads of pure emotions
Aparna Sen is an institution in herself and anything created by her is bound to draw attention. The Japanese Wife is the latest offing from Aparna Sen and the title in itself creates lot of attention. Most of Aparna Sen’s movies are based on Bengal whether it is 36 Chowringhee Lane or 15 Park Avenue, this time too the poster of the movie depicts a rural Bengal setting, but the name makes it evident that there is a strong Japanese connection. Well the movie is about a teacher in a village in Sunderbans, played by Rahul Bose, he lives with his widowed aunt, enacted by Moushumi chatterjee. The name of Rahul’s character is Snehamoy, the story starts from Snehamoy’s college days. Snehamoy has a pen friend from Japan and her name is Miyage.

The movie is characterized by brilliant screenplay and editing and I am saying this because the movie very beautifully brings to fore the blossoming of love between Snehamoy and Miyage by mere exchange of letters. The story is an adaptation from a book by the same name of the movie. The book is written by Kunal Basu and full credit goes to him as well as the script writer, who has transformed it into the screen adaptation for bringing to us a story that has been carved with strong convictions. A work of fiction should transport us from the hustle and bustle of our daily life and the story of The Japanese Wife rightly does that. The characters display firm faith and belief in each other. The characters are driven by their conviction, Snehamoy and Miyage goes on to exchange vows with each other through letters. In the age of internet this might not sound very significant, but it was indeed a unique act in the age of pen friends.
The Japanese wife deals with an array of emotions like longing, separation and frustration. Half way down the story a new member comes to stay with Snehamoy and his aunt. The member is a widow; played by Raima Sen. She comes to stay with her kid son. Snehamoy’s aunt gives her a place in their house since she is related to her friend and has nowhere to go. The characters of Raima Sen and her son come to Snehamoy’s life like a fresh breeze of air. Snehamoy develops fondness for the little boy, but he is so strongly rooted with his feelings for Miyagee that he could never embark on a new relationship with the widow.
The second half of the movie shows the tumultuous encounters of the characters with different obstacles and in midst of the ensuing storms, where do the characters finally end defines the climax of the movie.
A must watch for true fiction lovers.
