The Entire System Failed The Dying Sub-Inspector
By now everyone must have seen or read about the death of Sub-Inspector R Vetrivel in Tiruneveli on Thursday, the poor man was first bombed than hacked. He was lying fatally injured on the busy road when a cavalade of cars carrying two ministers, one collector and photo-journalist passed by. They all stopped, watched the show from safe confines and when assured there was no danger to their lives called the ambulance which when arrived was to carry the dead body of the twice decorated Sub-inspector father of two He was part of the team which nabbed Veerapan, the dreaded sandalwood dacoit.

The Authority:- State health minister MRK Panneerselvam, health secretary VK Subburaj, director of public health S Elango, environment minister TPM Mohideen Khan were in the convoy which came to the spot within minutes but what was being aired on the media was shocking. They just stood there, talking on their mobiles, wearing pristine white clothes, they did not go near the wounded man nor offered any vehicle, state owned, to take him to the hospital perhaps they were afraid that their clothes and cars will be stained with blood, not realising that that would have been a good stain not a blot on humanity. It is possible that poor Vetrivel might have voted for these ministers either directly or indirectly which was the reason they were enjoying this comfort, one would never know.Wonder what would have been the scenario if instead of the subinspector it was any one the authority lying on the road.Would the police had been spared of any action? The whole political community would have been baying for his blood. They expect their security to become a shield for them in emergency even giving up their lives but refuse to help anyone in his time of need. They failed miserably.
Bureaucracy:-Tirunelveli collector M Jayaraman reached the spot in a convoy, he was the one seen pouring water on the bleeding face albiet from a safe distance,He being an IPS officer must have been trained to handle such situations, afterall he manages the whole area.He had the authority and necessary conveyance to take Vetrivel but he did not do so,he failed in his duty of serving people.
Media:- The photojournalist, the person with the video camera, who just saw a great breaking news and started shooting. He gave the world the gory details of Vetrivel's injuries and the apathy of ministers and bureacrats but he failed miserably in one field , the field of humanity,he forgot that what he was shooting was not a stray run over by some vehicle but the writhing, bleeding body was that of a human being, same as he was. With one difference of course, his heart must have been replaced by A TRP generating machine, that must have been the reason for shooting the video of his death and not helping him.
Public:- There were other people also besides the above , but they remained mute spectators.Horrifying, shocking their expression seemed to convey but no one lifted a finger to help perhaps they were guided by the actions of the authority, bureacracy and media. If they, with all the means are not doing anything what can we just common public can do,they must be thinking. The compassion for a fellow human being suffering seemed to be missing.
The image of profusely bleeding and wounded Vetrivel, trying to raise himself and lifting his hand drenched with his own blood calling for help will haunt many people for a long time, but when the family of Vetrivel will see these images they would have only one question-
Why no-one helped their father/husband leaving him to die without any medical help?
There will be no answer from anyone.
