Anti-Islam sentiment is so rampant in this country that even the Christian church is being swept up in it. A new church in Phoenix, Arizona features a dome. Domes are traditional models of architecture in the south-west, alongside arches. Both architectures, though, are associated often with Arabesque designs and thus Islam.
Many residents saw the new church and because of the dome mistaked it for a new mosque. This sent alarm into the hearts of Islamophobes and ignorant types. After all Fox News is telling them that mosques are incubators of terrorists.
The church began to receive numerous calls expressing concern and had to inform people to just relax: this is a church. No need to fear us for we do not preach hate against America: just homosexuals, feminists, abortionists, ACLU, anyone who believes in the separation of church and state, and - o yeah , of course Mormons and Muslims:
Islamophobia may have reached a point in this country where people condemn Christians that they suspect are Muslims without ever checking the facts. In Phoenix, Arizona, a new Christian church has residents fearing that it is an Islamic mosque. The Light of the World multidenominational church is being built just off of Interstate 10 and features a dome-like structure. "Since the distinctive dome shape went up, church leaders said they have received phone calls from concerned neighbors who've mistaken the building for an Islamic mosque.
Joking aside, it is poetic almost that a church about be the victim of anti-Muslim animus. It is a symbolic statement that hate knows no reason and no boundaries. We may not think it affects us but it does: ultimately hate will sweep everyone into a pool of suspicion, fear and mistrust of our neighbors. It impugns the entire comunity. Thus as common victims it requires an indivisible effort against it connecting all faiths.
It is a common enemy. A church is also a victim. And it shows us the fallacy of dividing people. We all one in this and must all without distinction combit it.
