TEACHING PROFESSION: A LAST RESORT?

Teachers are the architects of the society we live in. They mould generations and their culture. A teacher affects eternity! He can never tell where his influence stops. This profession has always had a sense of sanctity that goes along with it. A good teacher earns more respect than he can ever imagine! But what if he’s bad?!!

This article is about the misfits in teaching profession! They seriously don’t belong here, but still they are here! Teaching is the last thing they should be doing and still they are doing it! Students don’t get the head or tail of what’s happening in the class and yet the teacher thinks he’s doing pretty well! Oh god… its one hell of a nightmare to go through such classes when compared to the sheer pleasure of sitting through a 3 hour session of a teacher who knows exactly what he’s doing and how to go about his business!

And sadly, the number of misfits in this profession is increasing at an alarming rate! And it’s there for everyone to see! Good teachers are hard to come by these days. And its only students who know how hard it is to cope with a bad teacher! We have to pretend listening to him even though what he’s doing sounds Greek and Latin!

Why is this happening?! Why does it have such a few takers? It may be because people with brains and people who can actually teach are attracted to a much lucrative profession than teaching! Or maybe there’s no money in it! It’s often a profession where people end up in…rather than getting there! I hope you get the difference!

Teaching is an art! Not all can do it. Even though a teacher is technically sound, he may fail miserably in conveying what he knows through correct channels to the students! Or he might have the channels all figured out but he doesn’t have anything to convey! In both the cases, the whole concept of teaching is lost!

We have all sorts of teachers! The one who scares the shit out of his pupils, one who just comes in, does his business and doesn’t give a damn to whether he was effective or not, one who himself is shit scared cos he doesn’t know a thing and almost stammers if doubts are fired, ones who fail to make an eye contact and end up teaching to the walls, and the perfect ones! Actually the list goes on… and it’s a totally diversified one!

And it is for this reason that this profession has kind of lost its respect amongst today’s generation. How often would you see a friend of yours speaking highly of his teachers? And how often have u seen the reverse happening?! I bet the latter wins and leave the former out of contention. Yes…it is really sad, but we don’t respect our teachers.

I cannot straight away blame the attitude of this generation. I would be stupid to do so… after all we have a point here! We are obsessed with quality…be it whatever! And if it’s not worth it, we seriously don’t give a damn to it! Same holds good for teachers too… if they are not good enough, they don’t deserve to be respected! Even if we try, we fail to respect them! On the other hand, respect comes automatically towards the best ones in business! It’s actually what they earn…not what we give them!

I felt like writing this after I read an article of a student insulting his teacher on his blog. I am not blaming him. But I felt sad for that teacher. He only has got himself to blame. He should have known it’s not his cup of tea. But he failed to!

The need of the hour for the misfits is to realize that they are in an unknown territory and it’s about time to get off the hook before someone actually throws them out! It’s time for them to figure out a new way to earn bread and butter because teaching is not the only profession out there!

I know it is not going to happen! If it would, it brings out an idealistic scenario! I know there are misfits in all freaking professions! So what?! We can’t throw everyone out! Can we?! Why am I contradicting myself here?! To do some justice to the name of my blog!! PARADOX!

After all we students know how to deal with the misfits! We give them only what they truly deserve!

Ha ha! Well that’s it! Am gonna end this here…With loads of respect to the true teachers who have influenced me to be what I am today, and with heaps of regret to the ones who couldn’t!
