Tawjihi Celebrations in Jordan

Results of General Secondary School Certificate Examination, known as Tawjihi in Jordan, were announced on Wednesday as expected.

Almost every year, this day is tagged by the unfortunate accidents caused by the joyous crowds celebrating the results. The main problem faced on this day is careless driving down the Jordanian streets, which is sometimes accompanied by people sitting on the edges of car windows while their trunks and heads stay outside the car, which makes any potential accident a much worse one.

This year, like every year, government announcements have warned of such actions, and announced that policemen will be browsing the streets with the intention of dealing with those responsible for such dangerous celebrations; a procedure that is very unlikely to stop the irresponsible celebrations, which continue as I write this article right now.

Every year, news reports of the same types of accidents are repeated, same images, yet different victims. The sad thing is that the ones causing these accidents are celebrating their newly gained proof of education. If this is the kind of education that we are providing our new generations with; one where students learn how to calculate complicated equations, yet cannot learn from real life experiences of people actually dying due to these actions, then I am not sure what we are offering in our schools. Isn’t it time to take real action and teach our kids to be responsible enough to act properly and safely in their own societies, out of their own conscience rather than fear of getting arrested? I think it is high time we start paying attention to those children’s conduct in their societies before teaching them academic skills; something that we really miss in Jordan.
