Subhadra Das - From A Mother to a Cold Blooded Murderess, all for a son
"First I killed my nine month old daughter by strangling her, everyone thought that she had died of illness".

"Than on Wednesday I took my 7 year old daughter Padmini to a pond behind my house when she was sleeping and drowned her. After a little while I took my 4 year old daughter Sumitra to the same place and drowned her. Than I tried to commit suicide in the same manner, but could not do so even after trying for three times. Now I have come to your police station to confess".
No, this is not any macabre Halloween story, but a real life incident which took place in Purshottam village of Orissa. The mother, a 31 year old Subhadra Das and this is what she told the officer in charge at the police station. They found the bodies of the drowned girls.
There was not a drop of tear in her eyes, nor any remorse on her face. The reason she gave for the gruesome murders was that she was frustrated at not having a male child, a boy would take care of her in her old age and when she died he would perform the last rites.
There was no pressure from her husband nor her in laws for the same. As per the SDPO Kendrapara Jaidev Sarangi, the women are driven by religious beliefs that if they do not have a son there will be no one to perform "Pind Daan" a ritual done by son only after the death of the mother or father, leading to ultimate salvation.
There are no words which can even condemn this ghastly act, nor express the feeling of hopelessness that in the times where India is going to the moon, our superstitions are taking us down to living hell, and there is no easy way out.
